United Nations Economic Commission for Europe - UNECE
United Nations Economic Commission for Europe
UNECE is one of five regional commissions of the United Nations with 56 member states in the European Union, non-EU Western and Eastern Europe, South-East Europe and Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and North America. As a multilateral platform, UNECE facilitates greater economic integration and cooperation among its member countries and promotes sustainable development and economic prosperity through policy dialogue, negotiation of international legal instruments, regulations and norms, exchange of best practices and technical cooperation for countries with economies in transition.
For example: Ageing
UNECE actively promotes several areas of the "7 billion actions" framework, for example in the area of ageing. The UNECE Population Unit works to promote policy dialogue among the UNECE Member states on various facets of demographic change in the region. It seeks to address the challenges of ageing while also leveraging its opportunities, highlighting the contributions older people make to societies on all levels. Its activities support the implementation of the Madrid Plan of Action on Ageing and the ten commitments set out by its Regional Implementation Strategy. In 2011/2012 it manages a major regional review and appraisal of progress made in realizing the Madrid Plan and its Regional Implementation Strategy ten years after their adoption. Comprehensive country reports from UNECE member states will be reviewed, identifying regional trends in a synthesis report. The review process will culminate in a Ministerial Conference, taking place on 18-20 September 2012 in Vienna under the motto "Ensuring a Society for All Ages: Promoting Quality of Life and Active Ageing". The Conference will take stock and define the way into the future.
